Hi Bridie
Good to hear from you. We are having fun down here. When I'm not having an adventure off station, I spend time reading in the Library. We have a cinema with really comfy recliner chairs. I watch movies and DVDs with the other expeditioners. My favourites are the documentaries about Penguins and of course HAPPY FEET! There are always lots of things to eat. We have a cupboard full of Tim Tams and Mint Slices that the Chef keeps asking me to stop raiding. I might need to go to the gym soon if I keep eating Tim Tams :)

Hi Kelsey
How are you? All the food for the year comes with us on the big orange boat. It takes three days to unpack it all. (Bron, the Chef, was a bit cranky on those days, she must have been very tired). We have fresh fruit and vegetables for the first few months after the ship leaves and then we live on frozen, canned and dried food. Bron has 10 000 ingredients to make our meals from! It's all in the 'Green Store', a big building next to the Red Shed (where I sleep).
The sea ice is frozen solid now. We are going to make a hole in it at mid-winter (June 21). Some of the crazy expeditioners will go for a swim. Do you think I should? Brrrrr. The water temperature will be about -2 C. We are going to go out to visit the Emperor Penguins at the Auster Rookery really soon. Everyone says it's amazing and they are so beautiful. I'm REALLY excited. I can't wait. The seals have gone out to sea for Winter but we should see them back in Spring.

I love your pictures they were great, how are you?How was the climb? Was it fun?We are learning about Ernest Skakleton and we are watching a movie about how brave and how much courage he actully had.The crew owned about 70 dogs and there all terrically cute. There is one dog called smile and if you look closely he is actully smiling and because its really cold one of the dogs breath you can see going every where. And there ship got stuck in the ice and they all had to hop out and saw through the ice.

Hi Charlotte
We are pretty busy every day working to keep everything on the station running. We have plumbers, electricians, a carpenter and diesel mechanics here and there are also people who watch the weather and people who fix our computers. We have a lady, Mel, who teaches us all how to look after ourselves when we go off station into the field. We call these 'survival skills'. If there was an emergency, we would know how to look after ourselves in the cold.
We play volleyball and darts and snooker most nights. I am playing Chess with Bron tonight and I am winning! :)

Wow, that's great to hear you saw a whale in the Antarctic video. We saw some from the big orange ship when we were sailing down here.
Most of the animals that were around the station have gone elsewhere for the Winter. When I arrived there were seals and penguins living around the station.
There are Snow Petrels flying by some days (they are completely white). (see if you can find a picture of one on the web).
I'm hoping we will go to the Emperor Penguin Rookery soon but it's a long way from station and we need to be sure the sea ice is safe to take our quad bikes on.
I nearly fell off the top of the wind turbine the other day when I was with Paul, the electrician and Wayne, the plumber. That's the closest to sky diving I have come :)
It's VERY cold now we are getting close to Winter.
Do you know someone who has been skydiving?

It's going well thank you. It's very cold. It was -29.5C today.
We saw lots of seals around station just after we arrived but they have gone out the open water now. All the ocean around the station is frozen and they can't go fishing when it's like that :)

Hello Liam
My bed here is pretty comfy but sometimes the wind is very loud and you can hear it all night through the triple-glazed windows (it's REALLY loud). The only other thing that keeps me awake is Darren, one of the communications techs, he snores unbelievably! I had to spend the night in a Polar Pyramid tent with him and I had earplugs and ear muffs on to try and get some sleep!
There are lots of animals living down here at different times of the year. I'm looking forward to seeing the Emperor Penguins soon. Can you tell me how many types of penguin live here?
We don;t tend to get Leopard Seals at Mawson, but they are know to be dangerous to people. Can you find a photo of a Leopard Seal on the web?

Lewis-we've seen lots of cool stuff!

Jeno-Bron has been to Colac, but it was while ago. It was a very nice place. She has locked the Tim Tam cupboard now, but I found the Milo stash!

Josh-Hope you are having fun too. Are you sure it was Bron eating the Tim Tams?

Tayne-We haven't seen any Polar Bears, can you google them and see where they live for us? The penguins have gone out to open water so they can keep fishing through Winter.

Heidi-The dried food tastes a bit different to fresh food. Next time you are helping with the supermarket shopping, you could ask to buy some dried mashed potato mix. It easy to make and you could try it for dinner?

Faith-How are you liking your new school?

Zara-Bron brought some dried gum leaves for me but I also eat the other things that she cooks for the rest of the team :)

Meg-We're glad you like your school. Bear Grylls really likes chocolate and muffins as well as his dried gum leaves.

Bear is off to Mt Parsons for the next week.

We saw some whales from the ship when we were coming to Antarctic. We don't see them now because the top of the ocean is completely frozen and they stay out to see where the water isn't ice.
We are hoping to go and visit the Emperor Penguins at their home in the next few weeks. I'll send photos!
We aren't allowed to go canoeing here because if we fell in we would get very cold and might even die. The water temperature is -2C at the moment. The wind blowing on you when you are wet makes you get even colder!

It's very dark here now. We only have two hours of light each day.
We can catch some fish if we have a permit but the top of the water is frozen now and it's very hard to break through. It took eight hours and an big machine to dig our swimming hole the other day. The water freezes in the hole again very quickly. So fishing is not very easy! Maybe in Summer?
It takes the big orange boat about 10-12 days to reach Mawson station from Hobart. Maybe your class could pretend they are sailing to Mawson and count the days as they pass. What sort of activities do you think you might do on a boat to make it fun?

We can talk on the phone from here. Expeditioners haven't always been able to do this. They had to write letters and wait a very long time to be able to send and recieve them from home. They had to wait for the boat to come and deliver things to the station. Sometimes this was only once in the year! It must have been very hard being away from family and friends for so long and not being able to talk to them.
The food is very good but then Bron is my friend so I like her food alot :)

Hi there Darcy
We went out today to drill the sea ice (we drill a small hole through the ice and put a measuring stick down the hole to see how thick the ice is) and we saw a seal! This was amazing because all of the ocean surface is frozen now. There must have been a tide crack (where the water moves alot underneath the surface and makes a hole, especially near land). I guess the seal came up through the hole. It will have to go back down again and back out to the open water. I'll send a photo to Mr R for you all.

Thank you for letting us know you like the photos. There are so many amazing things to take photos of here.
Bron slept in a wind that was nearly 100km/hr when she first tried sleeping in a bivvy bag. She didn't get much sleep and I think she might have been worried she was going to blow away!
One of the things that makes you very cold here is the wind. Being inside the bivvy bag means you are protected from the wind and can stay quite warm.
I like camping out but I also like my nice warm bed in the Red Shed.
The temperature during the day has been -35C some days recently!

I like most things that Bron cooks for us. We make our own breakfast in the morning, I have toast or cereal and fruit. For lunch we generally have soups, pastas and sandwiches. We have lots of different things we can put in our sandwiches. I like toasted, ham, cheese and tomato with a sprinkle of gum leaf :)
For dinner we have meat or fish, and vegetables. Sometimes we grow salad vegetables in our hydroponics room. We grow lettuces, tomatoes and cucumbers! It's pretty amazing to think we can grow these here.
We arrived at the end of Summer, so I haven't really experienced one here yet. But I like the blizzards we have been having. They really make you feel like you are in Antarctica! The wind howls past the Red Shed and nearly knocks you over if you go outside!
We have very short days at the moment (two hours of light). This means we have quite beautiful sunrises and sunsets. We don't actually see the sun, it doesn't pop over the horizon, but the colours in the sky are fantastic!

It's great to be able to send photos with an email these days. Bron plugs her camera into her computer and they are saved on it. Then she writes an email and can send the photos along with it to your class.
The ocean is very rough coming to Antarctica. We were lucky coming here because we came from Perth (instead of Hobart where the boat usually goes from). The direction of the waves meant it wasn't as rough, so not as many people got as sick as they usually do. Bron didn't feel very well and she was quite sick on her birthday. She was a bit grumpy about that :) We made her a toasted sandwich and a cake to cheer her up.
It took us 13 days to get to Mawson station from Perth. It usually takes about 10 days to get here but we had to wait out a storm at sea for two days. We usually sail from Hobart.

We're doing ok thank you. Bron and I are looking out for each other as friends do. Hope you are doing well too :)

G'day Elijah
We have two suckling pigs and two whole lambs to while we are here. We had one of the pigs at the ANZAC day weekend and it was very good. It took about four hours to cook but it was yummy in the end!
Do you like crackling? I love it!

Hi Millie
There are lots of scientific things going on in Antarctica. At Mawson we measure the thickness of the sea ice. This can tell scientists what is happening in the oceans of the world. We also take samples of the air, we can tell if someone has let off a nuclear explosion somewhere. We take magnetic readings and these are used when people are updating maps of the world. In winter we count the Emperor penguins, their eggs and their chicks. In summer there are scientists who collect information about the other penguins here (Adelie). We also have people collecting information about the weather.
All the people here during winter run the station and fix anything if it breaks. We have electricians, plumbers, mechanics, people who fix computers, carpenters and a chef to feed everyone :)
We melt snow for our showers and the heat from machines making our electricity is used to warm up our shower water.

Hello Elisah
We are staying here for a year. The boat will come and pick us up in Feb/March next year! It's a long time away :)
The temperature outside can vary between -35C and -5C depending on whether it is Winter or Summer. We need to keep our food frozen all the time at -18C which is why we have a freezer. I know it sounds silly, considering it's so cold here.

Bear is well. He has gone with a group out to see the Emperor Penguins at Taylor Glacier. I'm looking forward to hearing how his trip was when he gets back.
Do you have a map of Antarctica? Maybe your class could find out where all the Australian bases are including Mawson?

Hi Jackson
We eat all the sorts of things you probably do in Australia.
There are bathrooms with showers in the Red Shed where we live.
The Red Shed is heated by hot water running through pipes. We are pretty cosy. We snuggle up in bed under doonas at night. We also have special clothing for outside that keeps us warm.

Hi Darcy
I went for a swim at midwinter (June 21). I wasn't in for long. It's traditional that the expeditioners go for this swim on the shortest day of the year. We have a special changing room that we go into as soon as we get out, so we can put on dry, warm clothes.
Mr R is right, if you spent much time in the water you could die very quickly. There is an amazing open water swimmer called Lewis Pugh who swam a km in the Arctic and another in the Antarctic. He survived for 20 minutes but he did months and months of special training to do those swims.

Hi Sophie
We have meat or fish and vegetables or salad for tea. Sometimes we have a dessert.
I help the expeditioners with their work each day. Mostly I help Bron in the kitchen because we are friends, but I have worked with the electricians, the diesel mechanics and also the plumbers.
The snow isn't very deep, we mostly have ice down here and that can be up to a km deep.
I am friends with all the people on station. There are 15 people here.
Playing with teddy bears sounds fun.

Do you like hot chips or do you like 'crisps'?

Hi Chloe
Yes we throw snow at each other sometimes. One of the electricians, Paul, plays lots of tricks on people. He changed the clocks in the Station Leader's office the other day and he was nearly late for lunch :)
It took us nearly two weeks to get here by boat.
Bron does lots of swimming at home. She really misses not being able to swim here. But she did go into the water at midwinter. She was in for a very short time because the water is so cold. All the expeditioners go for a swim on this day. It is an old Antarctic tradition.
How long do you think the freezer looked from the photo that Bron sent?

Glad you liked the shot of the seal. It was amazing to get so close to it. Also it's unusual to see them at this time of the year so that was special.
I'm about to go to sleep! It's late here. (We are 5 hours behind you in Australia, I will still be sleeping when you get to school!). Bear has gone off with a group to see the Emperor Penguins at Taylor Glacier. He will be back later this week.

Hi Cody
Great to hear from you! I hope you and your class had good holidays and you are looking forward to learning about weather.
We have had lots of blizzards this year, it was blizzing for most of June, we hardly got outside that month. Sometimes we have to stay in the Red Shed because it's too dangerous to go outside. We might get blown away!
We've been out to the Emperor Penguins quite a few times. They are about 50km away from station. Now we are helping the Summer scientists count Adelie Penguins. We go to an Island close to station each day and count how many Adelies have come back to make nests over the Summer. At the moment there are only eight, but in a few weeks there will be 1000s.
Can you find a photo on the web of the two different types of penguins I have been talking about? I'll send Mr R some photos of Bear and the penguins.
How many different countries are being studied by your class for the weather project?
Cheers Bron + Bear

Hi Jack
How are you? We're pretty good here. Lots of us are starting to get ready for the end of our year and getting the station ready for the next group that will come in February next year (I know that sounds like a long time away).
We will have a few new people arrive in mid-November. It will be strange having a whole lot of new faces after spending the Winter with only 14 other people!
You asked about weather at Mawson? I can tell you a bit about this time of year if you like? The coldest September day on record at Mawson was -35.8°C on the 4th September 1982. Our coldest September daytime temperature was -24.1C and the coldest night time temperature was -29.0C. We've had some great days this month with almost no wind and it's been much warmer, but we're expecting a blizzard on Monday.
Cheers from Bron + Bear G
